MSA Talent Search-winner Tom Onslow-Cole (GB) finished his debut World RX Championship event on the RX Lites podium this weekend (3/4 October) and leaves Istanbul Intercity Park in Turkey ‘hungry for more’.

It was wild ride for the 28-year old GT ace, who, until the MSA shootout, was a rallycross virgin. Starting the weekend at the back of the pack, he quickly set about learning his Rockstar Energy Drink-liveried Olsbergs MSE-run car and impressed by finishing his first race in second place.

After taking third in the second race, OC went into day two in third place in the overall standings and started race three in fifth. A spin in the hairpin wasn’t in the plan but, with one more race to go before the semi-final, he had time to pull it back.

Overly eager to start race four, OC jumped the gun and was penalised for a false start. Now needing to take two joker laps, things were looking tough. A bad start didn’t help and he was in last place going into turn one. However, with confidence high and adrenaline pumping, he managed to work through the pack, take his two joker laps and still win the race - something rarely achieved even by the most experienced RX drivers.

A second place finish in the semi-final bagged OC a fourth place start in the final. A strong opening lap saw him climb to third and he held onto the back of the race-leaders until the chequered flag.

“What a ride!” he said after the podium. “For my debut weekend, it couldn’t have gone much better. It’s so different to GT racing but I think some of my BTCC skills came in handy. This track has a lot of gravel compared to other rallycross tracks and I thought that would hold me back but, actually, I was as strong in that sector as on the Tarmac. I’m absolutely buzzing and I’m hungry for more!

“I’d like to thank the MSA, the World RX Championship, RX Lites, Olsbergs MSE and Rockstar Energy Drinks for making this weekend happen. If I have it my way, I’ll be back soon.”

There’s no time to rest for the professional racing driver. Tomorrow afternoon he returns to the UK to shake-down his RAM Racing Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 and, on Wednesday, the team flies to the final round of the 24H Series in Brno, Czech Republic, where OC hopes to wrap up the GT3 drivers’ title.

Tom Onslow-Cole will fly to Istanbul in Turkey this weekend (2-4 October) where he will take-over the Olsbergs MSE-run RX Lites car in the FIA World Rallycross Championship and he’s taking Rockstar Energy Drink to the party.

OC, who won the seat in the 310bhp RX Lites car in an MSA Talent Search shootout earlier this year, impressed judges with his speed, car control and ability to attract and maintain sponsors. Five months later and he’s preparing to make his rallycross debut.

The Rockstar Energy Drink Athlete, rarely seen without his iconic black and yellow hat, was keen to make the most of the opportunity for the brand he has been associated with since 2010.

“I cannot wait,” he said when asked if he was looking forward to the new challenge. “The races are so action-packed and adrenaline-fuelled. When I watch at home I can’t sit still… to be a part of it is already giving me a huge buzz! ”

Although OC has not raced a rallycross car before, he has been to the World RX Championship event at Lydden Hill as a guest of superstar Tanner Foust.

“Tanner invited me to Lydden Hill a couple of years ago and I stood on the bank thinking ‘I have got to have a go at this’. So, when the MSA asked people to apply for the shootout, I couldn’t reply quick enough.

“A huge thanks to everyone who has been involved so far, it’s an incredible opportunity and one I intend to make the most of. The car looks awesome in the Rockstar Energy Drink livery - hopefully this won’t be the only time the fans get to see it!”

OC will race in the RX Lites category, which is the feeder series to the World RX Championship’s Supercar class.

“The standard of racing in RX Lites is impressive,” he added. “Some of the guys I’ll be racing against have had outright podiums in the Supercar class. I’m confident I’ll be quick on the Tarmac but racing on the loose is something new. From what I can see, it’s a very strategic sport and I think that’s where the races are won and lost. Luckily, I have a mega team in Olsbergs MSE to guide me through.”

The Turkish round of the World RX Championship takes place on 3/4 October and fans in the UK can watch on British Eurosport 2 at 1800hrs on Sunday.

The full Rockstar Energy Drink livery will be unveiled on Friday 2 October.
